Littlefair celebrates 70 years since victory in Europe
On May 8th Littlefair celebrated VE Day in Style.
In the morning we were joined by Dorothy Hatswell from East Grisntead Museum. Dorothy brought along memorabilia from their 'East Grinstead's Home Front' exhibition, including pictures, replicas of documents and artifacts. We found the Escape and Evasion map particularly interesting, this was a large square of rayon with a very detailed map of France and Germany. It could be used as a sling, hankerchief, bandage and more and could fold up quietly into a small space. Many people reminisced about their experiences and memories of the war.
After lunch the flags were put out and we got into the party spirit with the help of our friends Vi and Peg (AKA Laura and Kate) from Sweetheart Swing. These ladies sung us the songs that won the war and dressed up as American wartime entertainers, very glam! Our very own Ken Stacey got more than he bargained for when he was persuaded to do backing vocals for the last song, Goodnight Sweetheart and was rewarded with a kiss from the ladies!
We rounded off the fun with tea and cake in our best china. A real treat!
A very happy day was had by all that took part. Memories were shared, laughs had, toes tapped and respect paid to those that did not make it to the end of the war.
